DS brut
DS brut is the name of a hardware prototyping platform for the Nintendo DS that I began developing with Gordan Savicic in 2008. Our aim was to open up the popular gaming platform to custom sensors and actuators, which can then be used in experimental games and other homemade applications. You might call it an Arduino board for the Nintendo DS.
We had custom-printed circuit boards manufactured in China, and got plastic game cartridge shells from the grey market there as well. The whole project was released under an open license, enabling anyone interested to modify both the hardware and the software to meet their individual needs.
This project garnered us some significant attention online. We were featured on Make blog, gbadev.org and 8bitcollective, among others sites. Since then, we have had users from all over the world contribute improvements to the related software library.
