DS Revolt
2008
together with Gordan Savicic
Derived from Kurosawa’s 1957 film version of Macbeth, Kumonosu-jô (also known as Throne of Blood), Moving Forest was a performance that rendered the film’s final twelve-minute sequence into a twelve-hour sonic, coded action. Directed by Shu Lea Cheang and Martin Howse, Moving Forest was performed at the 2008 Transmediale Festival in Berlin.
Together with Gordan Savicic, we participated in the insurgency as “DS Revolt” and handed out modified Nintendo DS portable game consoles to participants. A combination of on-screen instructions for the real world (e.g. “go north 10 meters”) and the sonification of WiFi signal strengths led the players to the castle at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
From the libretto:
4]Insurgency
The rebellion marches in antennas.
Swarming an infested urban site,
spiderweb in deep forest.
Tunneling through the wall,
cutting through the air,
stealing the act.
How can a forest move?
